List of Companies Making a Stand Against Transgender Erasure Grows

121 additional companies have now signed the Business Statement for Transgender Equality.

On November 1st, 56 companies had signed a joint letter condemning the president’s plan to rollback transgender protections. The letter was penned in response to a recent report by the New York Times that revealed the Trump Administration’s intention to define gender at the federal level by what was assigned at birth based on genitalia.

On Tuesday, 121 additional companies had signed on to bring the total to 178. The companies that have signed the letter have a combined revenue of over $3.2 trillion while employing over 7 million people.

Sixteen LGBTQ+ community organizations, led by Out Leadership and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), have organized the effort to secure corporate signatories. The coalition also includes GLAAD, GLSEN, Lambda Legal, The National Center for Transgender Equality, The National LGBT Chamber of Commerce, The National LGBTQ Task Force, PFLAG National, The Trevor Project, The Transgender Law Center, and the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF).

"We're deeply inspired to see so many of the world's leading companies speaking with a united voice in support and defense of transgender, gender non-conforming and intersex people,” said Todd Sears, the founder of Out Leadership in a statement to the press.

STATEMENT

We, the undersigned businesses, stand with the millions of people in America who identify as transgender or gender non-binary, or who are intersex, and call for all such people to be treated with the respect and dignity everyone deserves.

We oppose any administrative and legislative efforts to erase transgender protections through reinterpretation of existing laws and regulations. We also fundamentally oppose any policy or regulation that violates the privacy rights of those that identify as transgender or gender non-binary, or who are intersex.

In the last two decades, dozens of federal courts have affirmed the rights and identities of transgender people. Cognizant of growing medical and scientific consensus, courts have recognized that policies that force people into a binary gender definition determined by birth anatomy fail to reflect the complex realities of gender identity and human biology.

Recognizing that diversity and inclusion are good for business, and that discrimination imposes enormous productivity costs (and exerts undue burdens), hundreds of companies, including the undersigned, have continued to expand inclusion for transgender people across corporate America. Currently more than 80 percent of the Fortune 500 have clear gender identity protections; two-thirds have transgender-inclusive healthcare coverage; hundreds have LGBTQ+ and Allies business resource groups and internal training efforts.

Transgender, gender non-binary, and intersex people are our beloved family members and friends, and our valued team members. What harms them harms our companies.

We call for respect and transparency in policy-making, and for equality under the law for transgender, gender non-binary, and intersex people.

Life is worth living. To live you must lose the fear of dying and death. I remember staring at a flag pole wondering if someone is going to run me up it. That thought has not and never will stop me from living my life. I'll fight for my life against whomever tries to shove me back in the closet. Even my own mother. I'd rather die than go back and I'm not going to hide in the shadows either. I refuse to do so. I will not take my own life but I have no fear of someone else doing so. I need to live regardless of the risk!

A contractor came to me to talk to me. He knows I'm transgender. I don't publicize it but my physique and voice give me away. He said to me, "I want to ask you about something but there is a risk. If I do I can be fired. I said, "You can ask me anything." He asked, "Are you happy?" I replied, "What do you mean?" He replied, "As you are." I answered, "I'm happier now than I've ever been my entire life." He then said, "My son has stated he's transgender. Some of the father's I know have had the same experience and rejected their children. I want to show him love." We then talked about love and acceptance. I then said, "You and your son are welcome to ask me anything." He replied, "You have told me a great deal. Thank you." He smiles and says hello when he sees me. The invitation is open ended and if he has any more questions I'm 100% open to answer them. A woman at the local convenience store told me about her son being transgender. I gave her my phone number and address on a napkin and the same open invitation. I grew up being taught it is proper to lie and to be passive aggressive rather than saying no. To break myself of that I'm now brutally honest and unafraid to speak the truth. I have the wisdom to know when it is inappropriate to speak or best to speak only of pleasant things but I refuse to lie.
