Cathalina Christina James is the third transgender woman of color to be murdered in Jacksonville over a period of 3 months.

According to a report by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, they responded to a call at 1:00 PM on Sunday afternoon at the Quality Inn located in the 8300 block of Dix Ellis Trail. Emergency responders found her deceased from a gunshot wound when they had arrived at her third floor motel room.

James was originally deadnamed and misgendered in initial reports by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Currently, the only reported suspect in the case was a yet to be identified man who was spotted driving from the scene in a beige colored vehicle.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who has any information regarding this homicide to call them at 904-630-0500 or email them at JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org. To remain anonymous, a reward of up to $3,000 is available if your information leads to an arrest. Contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.

James was originally from Sumter, SC and was planning on moving to New York. Her mother spoke with First Coast News and said that her daughter was always the life of the party and had a big and bold personality. She said her daughter loved to travel and loved to dance.

No. 1-1

As this was the third murder of a trans woman this year, the Jacksonville trans community is expressing fears that there is a single serial murderer committing them. I complimented First Coast News' Tyler White for their sensitive treatment of Cathalina's dead name and respectful coverage of her true gender identity.
