President Clinton sent America to war in the Balkans in the 1990s. And as conservatives now join progressives in calling for President Trump to withdraw from the so-called “long war” in Afghanistan, it’s a good time to remember that U.S. troops are still in the Balkans, and no one is calling for Trump to end that.
American troops are in Kosovo with other NATO forces as part of the Kosovo Force (KFOR) operation. Yet while conservatives increasingly side with progressives in calling for an end to operations in Afghanistan, they have said nothing about ending the long war in Kosovo. Why not?
The answer is quite simple: conservatives only think things that progressives want them to think.
If people want to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, that’s more or less fine with me since the U.S. no longer knows how to win wars. At the same time, if everyone is going to demand an end to that “long war,” I’m definitely going to demand an end to the even longer war in Kosovo.
