You Might Not Understand Irish Gaelic but You’ll Still Enjoy This Music [VIDEOS]

Paul Hair

I’m no expert on music. In fact, I know so little about the technical aspects of it I don’t know if I’d even rise to the level of novice. But I’m going to trust my ears in this case and say that these videos provide some excellent examples of traditional Irish music. The songs are in Irish Gaelic and if you’re like me, you won’t understand a word of them. But that doesn’t mean you can’t fully enjoy them.

TG4 is “an Irish public service broadcaster for Irish-language speakers.” Port is one of its shows. Both recordings come from it.

The video at the top features Niamh Farrell and Linda NicLeòid performing “Eleanór na Rún.”

And the one right below here is of Liam Ó Maonlaí performing “Amhrán na hEascainne.”

Like I mentioned, I don’t understand a word of Irish. And I don’t know enough about music to intelligently critique it (generally speaking). But I enjoyed these songs. And unless you just don’t care for Irish music, I think you’ll enjoy them too.
