In April last year, father and son Andrew and Owen Renner skied up to a black bear den on Esther Island, where they shot and killed a hibernating mother bear and her two newborn cubs. The two men were caught shooting the shrieking cubs at point blank range on video, and the Alaska Department of Public Safety tape was released by the Humane Society this week.
After the initial shots, the men continued to shoot into the den until the whimpering and screaming stopped. The men then tugged the mother bear out of the enclosure on the count of "one, two, three" and proceeded to share a bloody high-five for their success. And as if their celebration wasn't gruesome enough, the video showed the father appearing to snap a picture of his son while he posed shirtless next to the lifeless bear.
“They’ll never be able to link it to us,” the 18-year-old son said.
Both Owen Renner and his 41-year-old father Andrew Renner were fined thousands of dollars and sentenced to months in prison after pleading guilty in January to illegally killing the bear and her two cubs.
According to the state Attorney General's office, state prosecutor Aaron Peterson described the incident as “the most egregious bear cub poaching case his office has ever seen."
