This Quote Best Explains What A Demagogue Is
- Why do so many fall prey to the demagogue's false promises? Is it the artificial simplicity of how they explain current problems and their solutions? Is it their use or abuse of language? Please explain.
I don't think ignorance and stupidity or special skills of demagogues can effectively explain demagoguery. I think humans are innately tribal, with strong ingroup sentiments. Governments have replaced tribes, which are bigger and more powerful. A demagogue is a politician who aspires to be democratically elected as a chieftain.
There is safety in those people/politicians whom agree with what we've already convinced ourselves. The fear lies in those whom challenge our accepted knowledge. For most, safety, albeit dangerous in its own right is better than doubt. Even worse, self-doubt!
