Woman Who Called Michelle Obama An 'Ape' Sentenced To Jail Over Fraud
Three years after losing her job for making disparaging comments toward former First Lady Michelle Obama, Pamela Taylor of West Virginia is about to lose her freedom for defrauding the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
NBC News reported on Sunday that Taylor, previously the director of the Clay County Development Corporation, was fined $10,000 and sentenced to 10 months in federal prison, along with two months of home confinement, after pleading guilty in February to embezzling more than $18,000 in FEMA disaster benefits.
Taylor claimed her primary residence was damaged by flooding in June 2016 — floods that took the lives of 23 people — and said she was living in a rented space. But according to prosecutors, Taylor remained in her undamaged home the entire time.
U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart said Taylor’s actions were particularly egregious because she stole from those most in need: “Taylor’s fraudulent scheme took FEMA dollars away from those who needed it the most. Federal disaster benefits are critical to rebuilding infrastructure, homes and lives — not for lining the pockets of individuals who suffered no loss.”
In November 2016, Taylor made a Facebook post saying, "It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House. I'm tired of seeing a Ape in heels."
She was subsequently fired from her job.
