On Thursday, White House Economist Kevin Hassett expressed his view that federal workers are “better off” because of the government shutdown, according to TPM. On PBS “NewsHour”, he claimed that the shutdown allowed federal workers to have days off that they would have otherwise used as vacation days.
“A huge share of government workers were gonna to take vacation days, say, between Christmas and New Year’s. And then we have a shutdown, and so they can’t go to work, and so then they have the vacation, but they don’t have to use their vacation days. And then they come back, and then they get their back pay. Then they’re, in some sense, they’re better off.” -Kevin Hassett
Hassett’s statements did not sit well with Sen. Schumer, who tweeted:
“How out of touch must @WhiteHouse Economic Adviser Kevin Hassett be to say this about government workers not receiving a paycheck today?” -Sen. Chuck Schumer
The partial government shutdown is currently in its third week, with today marking the first day that federal workers have not received their paychecks.
