"We're not going to use taxpayer money to pay people more to stay home."

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin appeared before reporters on Saturday and suggested that unemployed Americans are receiving too much in benefits amid the pandemic.

  • Mnuchin said there was a “technical” problem with the way unemployment benefits were handled in the first round of pandemic relief pandemic where people were “paid more to stay home than they were to work.”
  • He said he is looking toward a “70 percent wage replacement” and is hoping the next relief bill will return more people to their jobs, noting there are tax incentives for going back to work.
  • Mnuchin said he believes the American people understand “that we’re not going to use taxpayer money to pay people more to stay home.”
  • There are currently more than 4.3 million coronavirus cases in the United States and 149,000 deaths.
