In this clip from 1999, Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) tells Larry King (formerly of CNN) that calling witnesses for an impeachment trial isn’t “unusual”. In 2019, McConnell is saying the opposite.

1999:

"It's not unusual to have a witness in a trial. It's certainly not unusual to have witnesses in an impeachment trial"

2019:

McConnell says fact witnesses are the result of "sloppy work".

"If House Democrats' case is this deficient, this thin, the answer is not for the judge and jury to cure it here in the Senate. The answer is that the House should not impeach on this basis in the first place."
