WATCH: Angela Merkel Laughs Off Republican Claim That She Was Charmed By Trump
According to Politico Europe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel “reacted with a smile — and no comment — when a reporter asked if it was true that U.S. President Donald Trump had enchanted her.”
- Richard Grenell, the former U.S. director of National Intelligence and ambassador to Germany, “claimed earlier this week that he watched Trump ‘charm’ Merkel, despite the famously chilly relationship between the two leaders,” wrote Politico.
- When she was asked whether she could “confirm Grenell’s account, Merkel said, ‘Oh, I see,’ looked down and then smiled, triggering laughter from the journalists in the room,” the report said.
“I don’t report from internal discussions and so I won’t comment on this now,” Merkel said.
- When asked whether “she was prepared to work withTrump should he win the U.S. election in November, the chancellor replied: ‘I work with every elected president of the United States. What guides us are our values and of course the interests on the German and the American side.’”
- She acknowledged that “there are differences of opinion here and there, which is in the nature of things, but there are also common things,” for example, a “shared conviction that NATO is an important security policy alliance.”
