Speaking in front of reporters on Wednesday, President Donald Trump gestured toward the sky and said, “I’m the chosen one,” with many perceiving the move as an indicator that Trump sees himself as chosen by God to lead the nation.
In context, the president’s declaration came as he discussed his trade war with China, which he said should have been fought years ago by any number of his predecessors.
"The fake news, of which many of you are members, is trying to convince the public to have a recession. 'Let's have a recession!'” Trump said in response to questions about the economic consequences of his trade war.
“The United States is doing phenomenally well,” Trump said. “But one thing I have to do is economically take on China, because China has been ripping us off for many years.”
He then listed several of his predecessors, who he said did nothing to put China in its place.
Though he would rather not be in this position, Trump said “somebody had to do it,” adding: “I am the chosen one,” as he looked toward the heavens.
