The Confederacy existed to perpetuate the institution of slavery. In his famous cornerstone speech, Alexander Stevens, the new country's Vice-President, says of the Confederacy:
"Our new government...corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."
Can someone who fought for slavery and division of the United States be considered by modern Americans as a past 'leader'.
