These people forget the promise of Lady Liberty that makes this country exceptional. We were founded by immigrants and built by immigrants. They also forget that over the years, immigration laws have gotten stricter, more limiting, more expensive, and less welcoming, even for those seeking asylum from repressive and even dangerous regimes. My own ancestors were fleeing persecution and communism in Eastern Europe. They didn’t have money, but all they had to do was fill out a form- or give the info to someone who filled it out for them-get on a boat, and come to America, where they were processed and given legal papers. They went on to find work, find homes, and educate their children. They were upstanding citizens. Some were more prosperous than others, but they all contributed to society and to their families, and made a better life for themselves. Isn’t that what we should want as a nation of immigrants?
