Trump advisers have told him repeatedly that such a plan would cost him the election in 2020.

According to Politico, Trump’s administration may auction off Florida’s coastal waters for oil and gas drilling. Republicans say that doing so could cost the president votes in Florida in the 2020 election.

Past presidents have refused to even entertain this idea because it is so politically abhorrent to Floridians. Yet, gas and oil interests appeal to Trump, as he wants to turbocharge U.S. energy production.

If Trump took action on this, he would basically be declaring war on Florida, especially because Florida Republicans are uniformly opposed.

“He would have a price to pay for that,” Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.), a Trump supporter, said.

Trump’s administration is allegedly waiting for the Senate to confirm acting Secretary Davind Bernhardt to fill the top position in the agency before the plan would be officially confirmed.

The eastern Gulf and Atlantic coast are apparently included in the five-year-off-shore drilling proposal.

Both Democrats and Republicans in Florida oppose offshore drilling. They are fearful of an oil spill like the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Another spill like this would damage Florida’s fisheries and tourist industry. Lawmakers from both parties in Florida signed many letters rejecting offshore drilling.

“We don’t want to see any of it in the Gulf, I don’t want to see any of it on the Atlantic side, which is where I represent,” Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.) said.
