President Trump reportedly told advisers he is considering suing Democrats if they push forward with their impeachment efforts, ahead of the official start of his 2020 campaign, according to a report by the Washington Post.

The president is “intrigued,” by the potential political advantages of impeachment, according to sources within the administration cited by the Post. Several advisers said Trump has studied how the impeachment proceedings against former president Bill Clinton boosted his approval ratings.

Trump is convinced, however, that Congress will not succeed in their attempt to impeach him because he has not done anything wrong, according to those same sources.

The report comes a day after Democratic lawmakers voted on Tuesday to take legal action in order to force Attorney General William P. Barr and former White House counsel Donald McGahn to provide information related to former special counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

While some advisers outside of the White House have told the president that impeachment would be a “political blessing,” most within the administration say the process would leave him “politically bruised.” A third camp has said impeachment might prove beneficial, but would “plunge the nation into chaos,” according to the Post.

Harvard professor Laurence Tribe described the idea of challenging an impeachment in court as “idiocy.” The constitutional law specialist added that “Not even a SCOTUS filled with Trump appointees would get in the way of the House or Senate.”
