President Trump signed an executive order reclassifying more than 100,000 career civil servants.

Last week, President Trump signed an executive order that effectively allows him to fire federal workers involved in policy making, including those who fashion guidelines and standards for public health.

  • MSNBC science contributor Laurie Garrett explains: “More than 100,000 workers are reclassified in the federal government from ‘competitive’ employees to what’s called ‘excepted’ employees. When you are so transferred, the president can fire you at whim.”
  • Garrett continued: “So if you disagree with the president, he can fire you. This is not about job performance … This is how he could fire [Dr. Anthony] Fauci, who otherwise is protected.”
  • “This is how he can fire people inside the FDA, who are trying to slow down the pell-mell rush, so we can have safe vaccines, safe, proven, effective drugs,” Garrett said.
  • Garrett concluded: “Rather than honor the people who are risking their lives and passing sage advice in this epidemic, the president is actually...changed the law so that he can fire them if they don’t prove to be loyal to his positions.”
