Trump’s Border Wall Puts Eight Species At Risk of Extinction In Arizona

Trump has suspended 28 federal laws that were meant to protect the environment in order to speed up wall construction.

President Donald Trump’s construction of his border wall has placed eight endangered or threatened species on the path to extinction in Arizona, according to Newsweek

Massive amounts of groundwater is being extracted around the San Bernardino national wildlife refuge in south-eastern Arizona. While drought and record high temperatures have depleted water reserves in the area, experts fear the building of the 30-foot high border wall will cause further damage.

Reduced groundwater levels threaten four species of fish in the region: the Yaqui topminnow, chub, beautiful chiner, and Yaqui catfish. The federally protected Chiricahua leopard frogs, Mexican garter snakes, Huachuca water umbel, and Aplomado falcon are also under threat.

The Center for Biological Diversity argues that the construction of Trump’s border wall has been expedited by his administration through the process of waiving dozens of environmental and public health laws.

President Trump suspended 28 federal laws that protect clean air, clean water, public lands, and endangered wildlife in October, which included the cornerstone 1969 National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, National Fish and Wildlife Act, and Migratory Bird Conservation Act.

The Center alongside other wildlife groups have sued to challenge Trump’s emergency declaration to fund the wall’s construction.

“With his border-wall obsession, President Trump continues disregarding the voices, experiences, and needs of those of use who call the borderlands home,” said Democratic Congressman Raúl Grijalva, who gathered with Arizona activists in Tucson to protest the wall earlier this month.

“Through environmental waivers and stolen funds, he’s building a wall that would divide families, further militarize our communities, and destroy the environmental treasures that make the borderlands unique. I’m grateful to the activists, organizations, and individuals united against this monstrosity, and will continue working to oppose funding for Trump’s useless border wall.”
