Following damaging testimony from U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland on Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump responded by saying that Sondland “is not a man I know well,” according to CNN.
Trump spoke to reporters before leaving for a trip to Texas, taking no questions but offering remarks from what appeared to be handwritten notes.
CNN reported that “Trump distanced himself from Sondland, holding up a thick stack of papers saying, ‘I just noticed one thing and I would say that means it’s all over.’”
The president repeatedly said he told Sondland over the phone that he wanted “nothing” on Ukraine and emphasized that he does not know the ambassador well. “Seems like a nice guy, though,” Trump added.
Sondland testified before the House Intelligence Committee that there was an explicit quid pro quo regarding Trump’s desired investigations into Joe Biden and the 2016 election and stalled U.S. military aid for Ukraine.
