Trump Promoting Conspiracy Theory That Romney Is Democratic Party's Covert Agent
A conspiracy theory floating around conservative circles claims that Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT), who was the lone Republican to vote for President Donald Trump’s removal from office, is a secret agent of the Democratic Party — and the president is getting in on it.
According to The Independent, just hours after Romney voted against him — over what the Republican described as an “appalling abuse of public trust” by withholding Ukraine’s military aid in hopes of extracting politically-motivated investigations — Trump tweeted a video condemning Romney as “slick, slippery, stealthy” for trying to infiltrate the Trump administration by “posing as a Republican.”
“Now his cover’s blown – exposed by news reports as a Democrat secret asset,” the video voice-over says, despite zero evidence that Romney is a Democrat.
Later, the president tweeted: “Had failed presidential candidate @MittRomney devoted the same energy and anger to defeating a faltering Barack Obama as he sanctimoniously does to me, he could have won the election.”
Romney lost his bid for the White House to former President Barack Obama in 2012.
The Independent reported that Trump previously posted shortened versions of the video on two occasions, but the reference to Romney as a “secret asset” was missing from the clip.
“The first came after Mr Romney said he was ‘sickened’ by Mr Trump’s conduct outlined in the Mueller report,” the publication reported, and the second time was “late last year when the senator expressed concern over a phone call with the Ukrainian president.”
