According to Media Matters, Pastor Robert Jeffress. A Fox News contributer, supports the death penalty even if innocent people are killed by it.
On Fox, Jeffress discusses the case of a man on death row who “found God” while serving his life-sentence after killing his pregnant wife and two daughters.
“The message of Christianity for 2,000 years has been that Christ is willing to forgive any sin for those who ask- including the sin of murder. I mean the Bible is filled with murderers God forgave. Moses, David, even the apostle Paul. But even though God’s forgiveness erases the eternal consequences of our sin- we don’t have to go to hell- it doesn’t erase the immediate consequences. And one of those consequences is the death penalty, God said.
Jeffress continued, “And contrary to what people think, capital punishment is not a violation of the sanctity of life, it is an affirmation of it. God is saying human life is so sacred, whoever takes it has to pay the ultimate price.”
When asked how he could tell the difference between those who had really found God and those who were lying, Jeffress said, “I remind people, the greatest example of an innocent person being executed was Jesus Christ himself.” Although Christ was innocent, Jeffress says, the Bible never calls for an end to the death penalty.
Jeffress finishes by saying that God says the “death penalty is the way to keep order in society.”
