President Trump also suggested that some Americans only wear masks to show their disapproval of him.

President Donald Trump said during an interview with The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that coronavirus testing is overrated, while giving himself credit for creating “the greatest testing machine in history.”

“I personally think testing is overrated, even though I created the greatest testing machine in history,” Mr. Trump said, adding that more testing in the U.S. led to an increase in confirmed cases that “in many ways, it makes us look bad.”

  • The Journal noted it’s true that more testing will produce more positive results but added that Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in a recent interview that increases in many states “cannot be explained by increased testing.”
  • According to the report, “Trump said he would not seek to replicate such widespread testing if there was a similar re-emergence in the U.S.” as took place in China, where the virus emerged.
  • The president also “allowed for the possibility that some Americans wore facial coverings not as a preventative measure but as a way to signal disapproval of him.”
  • Trump also said people tend to fidget with their masks, making it more likely they will become infected, despite federal guidelines stipulating that “wearing cloth face coverings helps slow the spread of Covid-19 and recommends washing hands before putting on the mask.”
