Trump: Federal Workers Would Rather The Shutdown Continue Than Get Paid

President Trump claimed on Christmas day that many federal workers told him he should hold out for border wall funding.

Many federal employees currently going without pay due to the government shutdown over border wall funding are happy to continue on sans paychecks until the president gets what he wants — according to the president.

ABC News reported Tuesday that President Donald Trump made the claim on Christmas day.

"Many of those workers have said to me and communicated, ‘stay out until you get the funding for the wall,’" he said, when asked for his message to the hundreds of thousands of federal workers either furloughed or working without pay.

"These federal workers want the wall,” he added. “The only one that doesn't want the wall are the Democrats.”

Trump reiterated that he will not cave in the fight over border wall funding, saying the government will remain closed until lawmakers deliver what he wants in full.

"I can't tell you when the government is going to be open," he said. "It's not going to be open until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they would like to call it."
