Trump: Before I Was President, The U.S. Never Had Any Tariffs (That’s A Lie)

Trump falsely claimed that the U.S. had never levied tariffs prior to his election.

President Donald Trump recently claimed that before him, no U.S. president had ever imposed a tariff on foreign goods, a statement that is blatantly false, according to civil rights outlet New Civil Rights Movement.

"We've never taken in ten cents [in tariffs] until I got elected," he told reporters on Monday.

Trump made the comments while discussing his tariffs on China. He said that the government is receiving “tens of billions of dollars” from China, another inaccurate statement, as price hikes on the Chinese imports are largely being paid for by U.S. consumers.

"I love the position we're in," Trump said, as the U.S. is on the brink of a trade war with China.
