President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday that House Speaker Paul Ryan should “be focusing on holding the Majority” instead of offering his opinion on birthright citizenship — a subject Trump said Ryan “knows nothing about!”
> “Paul Ryan should be focusing on holding the Majority rather than giving his opinions on Birthright Citizenship, something he knows nothing about! Our new Republican Majority will work on this, Closing the Immigration Loopholes and Securing our Border!"
Trump’s tweet came after Ryan responded to the president’s assertion that he could end birthright citizenship, which bestows American citizenship upon anyone born on U.S. soil, by way of an executive order.
When asked during an interview on Kentucky talk radio station WVLK whether Trump has the authority to eliminate the Fourteenth Amendment’s provision, Ryan said no: “Well, you obviously cannot do that. You cannot end birthright citizenship with an executive order.”
> Ryan was visiting vulnerable Republican Rep. Andy Barr in Kentucky when he made the comment.
