European countries threatened to install trade tariffs against the U.S. if Mr. Trump instituted trade barriers according to the Wall Street Journal.
“The Group of 20 summit, long a platform to tackle common problems for leaders presiding over 80% of the world economy, split in two at its outset, with Mr. Trump adopting defiant opening positions toward the rest of a group largely united on the issues of trade and climate change.”
The U.S., long used to being a leader at the G-20, seemed by and large eclipsed by the G-20’s other nineteen nations.
Mr. Trump’s affect and policies have hurt America’s standing so much so internationally, that far from leading the summit, the U.S. has been marginalized out of many important discussions. If this continues, the United States will become more strategically disadvantaged on the world stage. This could likely lead to more countries challenging America’s receding power or countries like China or Russia actively threatening our allies. (Russia already does).
