One former White House official said people were “shocked” by the request.

Early Sunday, the Wall Street Journal reported that last year the White House had requested plans from the Pentagon for a military attack against Iran. According to CNN, the request incited concern within the Pentagon and State Department as it had followed an attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad in September.

CNN reported that the Pentagon was not “caught off guard” and obeyed the request from the National Security Council.

"We continue to review the status of our personnel following attempted attacks on our embassy in Baghdad and our Basra consulate, and we will consider a full range of options to preserve their safety and our interests.” -Garrett Marquis, spokesman for the National Security Council

Both the Wall Street Journal and CNN reported that there was no clarification as to whether or not the plans against Iran were provided to the White House. However, it was also reported that the council had also requested plans for attacks against Iraq and Syria as well.
