Topeka, Kansas Elects Its First Latina Mayor

Topeka, Kansas has elected Topeka Councilwoman Michelle De La Isla to be its next Mayor. De La Isla will be the first Latina to serve as Mayor of the community in the city's history.

Topeka, Kansas has elected Topeka Councilwoman Michelle De La Isla to be its next Mayor. De La Isla will be the first Latina to serve as Mayor of the community in the city's history.

“Topeka, thank you for trusting me,” De La Isla called out at a reception her campaign held at downtown Topeka’s Top of the Tower. “I love you all!” She then celebrated by dancing with members of her family to the tune of Kool and the Gang’s 1980 hit “Celebration.”De La Isla, 41, a Topeka resident since 2005, will become the city’s second female mayor, following Joan Wagnon, who held that position from 1997 to 2001. She said she will also be Topeka’s first Hispanic mayor, first employed mayor and first mayor who is a single parent.
