The Pentagon greenhouse gas emissions are greater than many small industrialized countries’ emissions.

The defense operations of the United States generate more greenhouse gas emissions alone than some industrialized countries, such as the entire nation of Portugal, The Guardian reported on Wednesday. According to a study by Brown University, the Pentagon released about 59 million metric tons of greenhouse gases in 2017.

If the Pentagon was a country, it would be world’s 55th largest global contributor, surpassing countries such as Sweden and Portugal. The Pentagon has called climate change a national security issue and while it has reduced its fuel consumption since 2009, it could reduce them further by rethinking particularly fuel-heavy missions.

The Pentagon has not responded to requests for comment.
