"For 68% of people receiving it right now, they are being paid more on unemployment than they made in their job.”

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) expressed disgust at the fact that some workers may be receiving more money on pandemic unemployment than they would with normal wages, according to a Raw Story report.

  • Cruz told Margarett Brennan on CBS’ Face the Nation that he spoke to small business owners who “are calling their waiters and waitresses, they are calling their busboys, and they won’t come back.”
  • Cruz suggested that this was indicative of a lazy or entitled citizenry rather than fear of the coronavirus or depressed wages, especially for those in the food service industry.
  • He said, “The problem is, for 68% of people receiving it right now, they are being paid more on unemployment than they made in their job.”
