Swing-Vote Senator Will Oppose Witnesses: I Know Trump Did It. It Doesn’t Matter

“There is no need for more evidence to prove something that has already been proven" but isn't impeachable.

Republican Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) laid out in a lengthy Twitter thread why he will vote against hearing from new witnesses in President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.

His reasoning is essentially that the House has already proved its case against the president: Trump did the things Democrats claim he did. But according to Alexander, it doesn’t matter, because Trump’s actions do not rise to the level of impeachment — they were merely “inappropriate.”

“There is no need for more evidence to prove something that has already been proven and that does not meet the U.S. Constitution’s high bar for an impeachable offense,” Alexander wrote.

“It’s as though he’s entering a pleas of nolo contendere on behalf of the President and stating that the offense simply doesn’t matter,” TPM’s Josh Marshall noted.
