Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) claimed that Ukraine’s former president “actively worked for Secretary [Hillary] Clinton” in 2016, during an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press.
According to The Daily Beast, Kennedy told host Chuck Todd that he believes both Russia and Ukraine meddled in the last presidential election: “Russia was very aggressive and they’re much more sophisticated, but the fact that Russia was so aggressive does not exclude the fact that President Poroshenko actively worked for Secretary Clinton.”
Todd immediately pointed out the ridiculousness of the Republican’s claim, saying: “Actively worked for Secretary Clinton?! My goodness, wait a minute, Senator Kennedy. You now have the president of Ukraine saying he worked for the Democratic nominee for president. C’mon. You realize the only other person selling this argument outside the United States is this man, Vladimir Putin!”
The host also noted that the Russian president recently said he was thrilled that Republicans are pushing the Ukraine conspiracy theory, because “nobody is accusing us anymore of interfering in U.S. election.”
Kennedy also pointed to reporting that several Ukrainian officials “meddled in the election on social media and otherwise,” adding that “a Ukrainian court ruled that Ukrainian officials had violated Ukrainian law by meddling in our election and that was reported in The New York Times.”
But The Daily Beast noted that “the court has since canceled that ruling.”
