In a tweet, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) claimed that the Equality Act, which legally prohibits public and private institutions from discriminating against individuals on the basis of gender or sexual identity, is “so counterproductive” that it “divides our nation.”
“Americans are becoming more tolerant every day, which is why the Equality Act is so counterproductive. It unnecessarily pits communities against each other and divides our nation when patience and understanding are so sorely needed,” he tweeted on Friday, the same day that the House passed the bill.
The bill adds to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by adding gender identity and sexual identity as two more areas against which organizations cannot discriminate. One can’t help but wonder if Senator Mike Lee were a lawmaker during the 1960’s, would he have said the same thing about the 1964 Civil Rights Act?
