Rick Santorum: Single Mothers Are The Cause Of U.S. Mass Shootings

According to Rick Santorum, fatherless homes are producing mass shooters in the United States.

Republican Rick Santorum said on CNN's State of the Union that a significant factor in America's mass shootings that receives insufficient attention is that the majority of the shooters came from homes with no father figure.

After briefly acknowledging gun control, Santorum said Democrats and Republicans need to come together to address the issue of fatherless homes.

… Gun control is a debate that we need to have. But another debate we need to have is something that’s also common in these shootings, the fact that these kids come from broken homes without dads. And that is not something we’re talking about and that is the commonality… We want to talk about things we can work together on? How about working together to try to see what we can do to try to get more dads involved…

The fact that many mass shooters come from fatherless homes has become a significant talking point in some conservative circles.

And indeed, harm done to a child's development when a father or mother is absent from the home is a valid and worthy topic to study and address; but what is striking is that that vast majority of fatherless young men do not go on to become mass shooters.

It is notable that Santorum offered no actionable policies in line with his thinking.

Rick Santorum is a piece of trash... I have a few more choice words for this sleaze bag... I bet you this disgusting moron never even met a single Mom. I did a better job at raising my son than most of his followers who teach hate and racism to their kids.

If ppl look at a very common element in all these shootings, the single parent/ fatherless thing is undeniably present, as is a history of emotional problems/depression and psychoactive drug use (prescription).

As much as I loathe Rick Santorum, as a teacher, I will have to agree with him. The number of boys I see who are emotionally unstable, or who have been on ADHD meds since kindergarten come from single mothers. These boys don't know how to control themselves because their mothers coddle them to the point of no return. Then when the boy reaches a certain age and start smelling himself, the mothers can't do much because they become so big. I can't tell you how many times I sat in PTA and parent conferences with mothers who have thrown their hands up because they can't control their teen sons anymore. And since many boys come from these fatherless environments, they are more prone to do things like mass shootings or any other kind of violence because their moms can't stop them psychologically or physically. Now, a liberal's solution would be not to address the father issue. They would dismiss it and suggest that these boys need "mentoring" programs. BS. These boys need fathers...And unlike mothers, most fathers create boundaries for their sons starting at a young age. Mothers do not. I'm not speaking of ALL MOTHERS, I'm speaking of most. The writer suggested that the vast majority of fatherless boys don't commit mass shootings. That's true but that's not a valid argument. That's like saying the vast majority of fatherless boys are not in prison. You need only to analyze the criminal population and find commonality among them, not compare them to all boys. It's sloppy thinking and another way to dismiss the importance of fathers to assuage some feminist viewpoints whose theories and practices and beliefs are raveling at the seams as we see more destructive behaviors among our young people--both girls and boys.
