Republicans Increasingly Believe That Education Is Bad For America

Erica

According to Pew Research Center, 58% of conservatives believe higher education negatively affects society's direction.

Republicans' appreciation for higher education is waning more with time, leaving education advocates concerned that conservative disdain for universities and colleges might have the power to threaten such institutions.

According to the Washington Post,

In July, a Pew Research Center study found that 58 percent of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents believe colleges and universities have a negative effect “on the way things are going in the country"....

That number is up from 37 percent just two years ago.

A Gallup poll in August found that a third of Republicans had confidence in universities, which they viewed as too liberal or political.

Some Republicans simply see higher education as a waste of money; others believe it is liberal indoctrination.

“Why does a kid go to a major university these days?” said Frank Antenori, 51, a former Green Beret who served in the Arizona state legislature. “A lot of Republicans would say they go there to get brainwashed and learn how to become activists and basically go out in the world and cause trouble.”

Though U.S. universities are envied around the world, he and other conservatives want to reduce the flow of government cash to what they see as elitist, politically correct institutions that often fail to provide practical skills for the job market.

The educational system was designed to create workers for the industrial revolution's production lines! We profess to value critical thinking in education and then when students challenge contemporary concepts, step outside of the "learning objectives" and fail to grasp "student competencies" as pre-determined, they FAIL Does the educational system REALLY foster critical thinking abilities OR does it simply serve to program effective BOTS???

Drakelover

Since when is the left critical thinkers? Interview most college students and they can name celebrities, but don't know who's running their State and occasionally Federal government. Things they SHOULD know if they vote. They are just pawns for the media and Democrats. They are the ones making the brown shirts. Hitler was socialist.

Nice try, you gullible Liberals, but education is not what we object to..The Indoctrination, hate, intolerance, is the problem..Oh and the "uneducated" Trump was referring to, are the plumbers, and welders etc, making 80K a year, while Liberal arts majors owe 70K in school loans, serving coffee at Starbucks, for $9 an hour..lol..

durak_zheni

Sorry Peteaz, but there is no indoctrination, and that hate an intolerance that you speak of is only hate an intolerance of ignorance. That plumber making 80K a year will always make 80K a year. Those liberal arts majors currently working at Starbucks will soon be your boss! So sad to be you!

You don't think the billions of dollars the Koch brothers pay politicians has anything to do with policy? How about Big pharma? The fossil fuel industry? Maybe you will open yourself to reality when I tell you the Democratic party is guilty of it, too. Both sides serve their donors. You're naive to think otherwise as the proof is readily available.
Liberals have been guilty of shutting down conservative speakers and that is wrong. They did it to Bill Maher, too.
I do think conservatives hinder education. They're notoriously anti-science. They are the reason teachers are afraid to teach evoloution because they their beliefs are equivalent to scientific facts.

There is value in education and conservatives know this. What is of dubious value are parts of the curriculum. Particularly offensive: the twisted perspectives of History, English,. Science and math are also compromised by presenting global warming as 'proven and irrefutable !'.
As to college: What is Gender Studies ?? What discipline is this? Male vs Female, that has meaning if you talking about electrical connectors or plumbing fittings.

The indoctrination makes the education worthless. It's like the brownie story. Here, have a brownie!!! Yes, the dog got diarrhea, but it was only the tiniest drop that got in there...

College is supposed to be a place where you learn truth and truth is tested by logic, philosophy and argument. That is NOT what many colleges are today.

2 Bachelor's with a 3rd completed but refuse to repay for classes already taken here. A Masters as well. Here are some of the classes at 1200 a pop I was forced to take in order to graduate: Social media 101: how to navigate and use popular media platforms. Women's Studies: most of the class was anti male to include an entire week on why a vibrator is better for you than a male counterpart. Sociodynamics: spent 6 weeks learning about socio differences between demographic areas....sounds great until you realize it basically was 6 weeks of learning why fast food is prevelant in urban areas. English 101...same class you take in Senior year...And yes I asked to CLEP out. Budget 101....as in your dang household.

Tell me how any of that at a bachelor level is beneficial.

It seems to me that there have been times that Trump has reinforced this notion by suggesting that more people should go to vocational type schools. There certainly isn't anything wrong with a vocational program, but Trump talk in of itself is a lowering of intellectual standards.

Step back and look at the issue. Stop pointing fingers. When it comes down to it we all basically agree. We are all just so keyed up to argue the details that we miss the point. Does anybody really want to go to a doctor with zero education? Or a lawyer that has never studied the law? And what about the scholars that devote their lives to art and music? Every single one of you listens to or watches some form of entertainment. Do you think the stuff is just made without any technical expertise? How can you have a new idea if you don't know what ideas already exist?

Adagio4639

"since when ARE the Left critical thinkers?" "< Since THE Enlightenment. Hobbes published Leviathan in 1651, which expounded an influential formulation of social contract theory.

Hobbes also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be "representative" and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law that leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a "social contract" remains one of the major topics of political philosophy. That required "critical thinking" skills that seem to be lacking among Republicans today.

The title is disingenuous. It isn't education that conservatives have a problem with, it is the liberal, leftist agenda that has permeated institutions with indoctrinating agendas instead of educating students.

B.S.! They hate science, which is neither liberal nor conservative but just provable & true. Republicans hate the truth & worship lies & fairytales. They want to push their ignorant religious views onto folks who are too smart to buy into their ancient prejudice & magic show. They defend molesters and racists while decrying those who fight for the poor & defenseless. This is the opposite of what Jesus taught, but they haven't actually read the bible! Most of them can't read above an elementary school level. They love fetuses but HATE live babies who might need food & healthcare. This makes no logical sense, but they hate logic as well. The good news is that this country chews up and spits out dumb people. All but the richest of them will get what they deserve.

While we are navel-gazing our insular opinions, the gap between China and the United States -- the two leading producers of college graduates in 2010, with 18 and 14 percent, respectively -- will grow even larger by 2020.

China is expected to produce 29 percent of all higher education graduates studied in the report, and the United States is expected to produce 11 percent of all those graduates.

India, which produced 11 percent of graduates in 2010, is expected to overtake the United States and produce 12 percent of the share of graduates by the end of this decade.

That's because Asian countries, higher education is revered. In the US, it's increasingly considered "elitist," especially by those who have never had the opportunity to obtain one, and don't want some "hotshot" with a "fancy-schmancy" degree telling them that they can't say "nggr."

The US needs to "revere" education and encourage people to pursue it. Otherwise the gap you speak of will continue to widen.

Incorrect. Education is inherently horizon-broadening. The more you learn, the less you cling to misconceptions. To an outsider, kids who go into college with certain beliefs and come out with a changed opinion, it probably does look like indoctrination. Turns out knowledge is rather inherently "left" as you say.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The educated tend to think for themselves, ask questions, and insist on decent answers. Republicans tend to be authoritarian and expect complacency and compliance. I've heard the chatter against the "leftist" agenda in universities. Translated into intelligent conversation, that means that "leftists" tend to insist that others learn to think and decide for themselves and not blindly follow the ways of others who don't have the welfare of us all in mind. That scares the likes of Trump and the GOP.

I'm one of those hyper-liberal, hippie, commie, California college professors, and while there is a huge strain of anti-intellectualism in the U.S., our faculties tend to be far left, and intolerant of any dissenting views. Universities, and even high schools are basicly liberal. When political leanings should not be in any classroom except political science where all sides should be expressed. Universities have turned to pigs feeding on the trough of the government, and government student loans. The US needs more trade schools, and less, smaller universities.
