GOP Senators Mike Lee and Joni Ernst have introduced the “Cradle Act” which would allow parents of newborns to use Social Security savings to pay for time off after the birth or adoption of their child. Parents who take advantage of the program would then delay their retirement in order to pay back the money.
Lee says, “I think most people would look at this as an opportunity that they might not otherwise have. An opportunity to benefit from payments that they’ve been making already for years.”
Ernst says that the U.S. is behind the rest of the industrialized world on this issue, which is why they’re stepping up to address the problem.
“We think it’s time to catch up with other countries” she said.
