“[Bannon] has no incentive to cover up for Trump, or his family members." - Richard Painter, Republican ethics lawyer

Given the accounts within Michael Wolff's latest book, it is plausible that former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon could be cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller in the Russia investigation.

Bannon has made no public statements so far that excerpts from the book are inaccurate, leading one to believe there is at least some truth within the pages of "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House".

According to the Guardian, a former George W. Bush ethics lawyer has reached the same conclusion:

“Bannon was an insider in the campaign at the highest level, and in the White House all the way to last August,” said Richard Painter, chief White House ethics lawyer under George W Bush. “He was talking to the president constantly – I can’t imagine Trump not confiding in him, including over the Russia inquiry.”

With the tension-filled relationships between Bannon and multiple Trump insiders, not the least of which being Jared Kushner and Invanka Trump, Bannon would have little reason not to cooperate with Mueller.

“Bannon may already be cooperating with Mueller for all we know,” Painter said. “He has no incentive to cover up for Trump, or his family members.”
