Republican Chairman Shows Some Courage And Denounces Iowa’s Steve King

Rep. Steve Stivers condemned Rep. Steve King's behavior and words in a Tuesday tweet, denouncing white supremacy.

Ohio Rep. Steve Stivers, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), condemned Iowa Rep. Steve King’s recent racist remarks and behavior on Tuesday, according to Axios.

Stivers tweeted: "Congressman Steve King’s recent comments, actions, and retweets are completely inappropriate. We must stand up against white supremacy and hate in all forms, and I strongly condemn this behavior."

King recently defended his association with a Nazi-linked Austrian group, which he gave an interview in August, decrying the "decline" of Western civilization.

Until now, Republicans have failed to confront King’s racist comments and actions, which has included support for far-right nationalists in Europe and the use of white supremacist rhetoric.

> The Republican Party has previously looked past King's racist comments, and Stivers' tweet is a surprising departure from that — especially one week before the midterm elections when recent polls show King is leading by just one point and the Cook Political Report shifted his race from "likely" to "lean" Republican.
