According to NBC News, three U.S. officials have reported that since January, President Trump has been asking his administration to reinstate the separation of migrant families who cross the border into the U.S.
Kirstjen Nielsen, Trump’s former Homeland Security secretary, resisted. She told Trump that federal court orders do not allow the Department of Homeland Security to reinstate the policy. She also reminded him that if he reinstated the policy, he would only be reversing the executive order he made in June which ended family separations.
One official said that they think Trump believes family separation is the most effective deterrent for asylum seekers.
