(Report) Trump’s Childish Antics May Cause Gov’t Shutdown

Democratic leaders and President Trump were supposed to meet today until Trump tweeted childish insults at them.

Following a tweet from the president Tuesday morning indicating that a budget deal with Democrats would be unlikely, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer decided against attending the meeting. If a deal is not reached by December 8, the government could face a partial shutdown.

“Given that the President doesn’t see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a joint statement.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded:

“It’s disappointing that Senator Schumer and Leader Pelosi are refusing to come to the table and discuss urgent issues. The President’s invitation to the Democrat leaders still stands and he encourages them to put aside their pettiness, stop the political grandstanding, show up and get to work. These issues are too important.”

The current deadline was part of an agreement between Pelosi, Schumer, and the president earlier this year.

The Dec. 8 deadline was set in a deal Schumer and Pelosi struck with Trump -- against the wishes of Ryan and McConnell -- to avoid a government shutdown and debt default in September. They agreed to fund the government at current levels and suspend the debt limit for three months.
