President Donald Trump keeps wrongly insisting that Democrats are responsible for the separation of children from their parents at the southern U.S. border, and according to the Washington Post, though he could fix the situation now, Trump hopes to use these families as a tool for negotiations.
What does he want? An overhaul of U.S. immigration laws, not the least of which being full funding for his long-promised border wall – the wall he sold during his campaign as being paid for by Mexico.
“The president has told folks that in lieu of the laws being fixed, he wants to use the enforcement mechanisms that we have,” an unnamed White House official was quoted as saying by The Washington Post. “The thinking in the building is to force people to the table,” the official said.
The Post also reported that, according to House Democratic aides, neither Trump nor his allies among Republican lawmakers have made a meaningful effort to reach a bipartisan agreement on the issue of breaking up families.
“On the legislative side, they are not trying to talk to any Democrats,” Drew Hammill, deputy chief of staff for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), told the Post. “They are holding the kids hostage,” he said.
