Report: McConnell’s Refusal To Provide Help To States Could Cost Over 4M Jobs
Mitch McConnell doesn't want to provide coronavirus relief to blue states whose economies are declining
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has refused to bail out “blue states” suffering from budgetary problems related to the coronavirus pandemic, but GOP-controlled states are suffering as well and millions of jobs could be at stake, according to AlterNet.
- An analysis from Moody’s Analytics shows that the U.S. economy could recede by 3 percent and as many as four million jobs could be lost if Congress does not provide adequate support, The Wall Street Journal reported..
- The Trump administration has offered to give $150 billion in coronavirus-related aid to states. However, Democrats in Congress have insisted that the states need upwards of $915 billion in coronavirus relief.
- McConnell has written off state aid as a "blue state bailout," and President Trump shares that sentiment. The president tweeted that House Democrats "only wanted BAILOUT MONEY for Democrat run states and cities that are failing badly."
- However, “The Wall Street Journal noted that deep red Louisiana, for example, is up against a 46% decline in revenue,” AlterNet noted.
- The outlet added that “Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana has asked for $500 billion in relief for state and local governments — which is $415 billion less than House Democrats asked for on May 15, but $350 billion more than the Trump Administration’s $150 billion offer.”
