Report: Giuliani Is Now The Subject Of Three Different Criminal Investigations
The president’s personal attorney currently faces legal trouble in three investigations, according to New York Magazine, with Bloomberg News reporting that Rudy Giuliani is now the subject of federal investigations into possible campaign finance violations and failure to register as a foreign agent.
Giuliani is also neck deep in President Donald Trump’s Ukraine scandal, which impeachment investigators are probing with public hearings this week on Capitol Hill.
“The U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan and the Justice Department in D.C. are looking into his business dealings in the country,” New York Magazine noted, “while the FBI is evaluating if his actions have been willingly or unwillingly influenced by a foreign government.”
At issue in the newest investigation is whether Giuliani broke laws against bribing foreign officials, leaving the attorney vulnerable to an extortion charge over his part in pressuring Ukrainian officials to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and a conspiracy theory regarding Ukrainian involvement in the 2016 election.
Former federal prosecutor Kenneth McCallion told Bloomberg “that a charge like that could implicate the president in a criminal activity, though he could not be charged while in office.”
“I would not be surprised if he gets indicted,” Mimi Rocah, a former federal prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, told Bloomberg. “It’s clear Giuliani is up to his ears in shady stuff and there’s tons of smoke.”
