A Minneapolis club owner says George Floyd and Derek Chauvin both worked security at her club until the end of 2019.

According to Minneapolis’s ABC News affiliate, George Floyd and the former police officer arrested in his death both worked security at the same south Minneapolis nightclub until the end of last year.

  • 5 INVESTIGATES reported that “Floyd and now-former Officer Derek Chauvin both worked security at the El Nuevo Rodeo club on Lake Street, according to Maya Santamaria,” the club’s owner until a few months ago.

  • Santamaria said, "Chauvin was our off-duty police for almost the entirety of the 17 years that we were open.”

  • She added that while Floyd and Chauvin’s employment overlapped, “Chauvin worked outside and the security guards were inside."

  • The former club owner said she could not be sure if the two men knew each other “because there were often a couple dozen security guards, including off-duty officers.”

"My friend sent me (the video) and said this is your guy who used to work for you and I said, 'It's not him.' And then they did the closeup and that's when I said, 'Oh my God, that's him,'" Santamaria said. "I didn't recognize George as one of our security guys because he looked really different lying there like that."

5 INVESTIGATES reported that Santamaria continues to operate La Raza 95.7 FM radio station, which is located in the same building as El Nuevo Rodeo, “two blocks east of where protests erupted in front of the Minneapolis Police Department Third Precinct and spilled into nearby businesses.”

Santamaria said her glass doors were smashed during the protests, and the building was spray painted with graffiti.

"All of the neighborhood has come out to volunteer and clean up and lend a hand,” she said.
