Report: Federal Prosecutors Have Taken New Steps In Giuliani-Related Probe
As President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial was concluding in the Senate this month, federal prosecutors in New York were pushing forward with their investigation into his personal attorney, Rudy Guiliani, and two of Giuliani’s associates, according to people familiar with the activity.
The Washington Post reported that the U.S. attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York contacted witnesses and sought new documents in relation to the probe, which has already brought about the indictment of Giuliani associates Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman on campaign finance charges.
Included in the the scope of the investigation is Giulani, Parnas, and Fruman’s activities in Ukraine, most specifically their work to oust the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch.
Prosecutors are also looking into two companies tied to Parnas, who has in recent months become a harsh critic of both Giuliani and the president. Giuliani’s international consulting work is a focus of the wide-ranging probe as well.
Trump previously blasted the investigation into his personal lawyer, tweeting in October, “So now they are after the legendary ‘crime buster’ and greatest Mayor in the history of NYC, Rudy Giuliani. He may seem a little rough around the edges sometimes, but he is also a great guy and wonderful lawyer. Such a one sided Witch Hunt going on in USA. Deep State. Shameful!”
The increase in activity in the Giuliani-related probe comes even as Attorney General William Barr admitted that he has set up a special “intake process” for Giuliani to feed allegations about former Vice President Joe Biden to the Justice Department as he continues looking for dirt on the presidential candidate in Ukraine.
The Post noted that the “parallel developments mean that one part of the Justice Department is scrutinizing Giuliani while another is accepting information from him allegedly concerning a political rival of the president.”
At the same time, Barr has come under increased scrutiny himself, after appearing to intervene in the case against Trump’s longtime friend Roger Stone.
