The list of prominent Democrats who received pipe bombs this week grew to include not only former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton but also California Rep. Maxine Waters, former CIA Director John Brennan and former Attorney General Eric Holder, according to The New York Times.
The devices were similar to one received by billionaire George Soros earlier in the week, a law enforcement official told The Times, and the package meant for Brennan was delivered to CNN — a news network loathed by many in right-wing politics.
> None of the devices harmed anyone. Law enforcement officials said they were investigating whether all the devices were sent by the same person or persons.
> Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Obama, Mr. Soros and CNN have all figured prominently in conservative political attacks — many of which have been led by President Trump. He has often referred to major news organizations as “the enemy of the people,” and has had a particular animus for CNN.
The device intended for Holder reportedly was misaddressed and returned to sender — which happened to bear the name of Florida congresswoman and a former Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Her name also appeared on the return address for the packages sent to Brennan and Soros.
> Another package addressed to another Democrat, Representative Maxine Waters of California, was intercepted at a Congressional mail facility, she said in a statement. In recent months, Ms. Waters has been a frequent target of Mr. Trump.
Trump addressed the situation on Wednesday afternoon, telling reporters that “Acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America.”
