State Sen. Randy Feenstra defeated Rep. Steve King in the Iowa Republican primary on Tuesday.

Rep. Steve King suffered defeat in Iowa’s Republican primary on Tuesday, losing to state Sen. Randy Feenstra for Iowa's 4th congressional district, Axios reported.

  • Feenstra enjoyed support from the GOP establishment beginning in January and “consistently dominated King in fundraising,” the news outlet reported.

  • The state senator, whose campaign painted “King as an ineffective ally to President Trump,” will likely keep King’s seat safe for Republicans in November.

King’s long history of making racist statements came to a head last year when “House Republican leadership stripped the nine-term congressman of his committee assignments.”

  • Axios noted that the Republican became “pariah within the Republican Party” after a 2019 interview with The New York Times in which King questioned “how the terms ‘white nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization’ became offensive.”

  • Feenstra reportedly chose not to focus on King’s racist rhetoric during the campaign, opting instead for the Trump narrative.
