Remember When Joe Arpaio Called His Jails A ‘Concentration Camp’?

Ocasio-Cortez got backlash for comparing detention centers to concentration camps, but where is it for Joe Arpaio?

When Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez compared ICE detention centers to concentration camps, she received a significant amount of backlash. Republican politicians, along with some Democrats, have been at the forefront of criticizing AOC for her comments.

However, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, pardoned by President Trump, made a similar comparison, except he didn’t compare another detention facility to a concentration camp. He compared his own detention facility to one. Later, Arpaio claimed he was only joking and, when pressed, said, “But even if it was a concentration camp, what difference does it make? I still survived. I still kept getting re-elected.”

Unlike Ocasio-Cortez, Arpaio did not receive a comparable amount of criticism. In fact, he went on to receive significant support from numerous Republican politicians after that.
