On Friday, prosecutors in Cook County, Illinois charged R&B singer R. Kelly with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to The Daily Beast.
The charges come a week after lawyer Michael Avenatti reportedly turned over a tape to the Cook County State’s Attorney Office of him performing sex acts on an underage girl who was later identified to be 14 years old.
R. Kelly has been repeatedly accused by young and mostly black women of physical and sexual abuse. In 2002, he was also indicted on 21 counts of child pornography.
Kelly has also received public backlash throughout the news and social media, especially after the release of the Lifetime docu-series, “Surviving R. Kelly.”
The docu-series had featured a number of his alleged victims who described the acts of abuse he performed on them.
The continued reports of abuse by R. Kelly also led to the #MuteR.Kelly campaign.
