Putin Jokes That Russia Will Meddle In Upcoming U.S. Presidential Election
Russia’s president believes the current Ukraine scandal plaguing President Donald Trump’s administration is the work of Democrats who will stop at nothing to remove Trump from office — and he joked that Russia will indeed interfere in the upcoming U.S. election.
According to Reuters, President Vladimir Putin during a conference in Moscow that Trump’s attempts to have Ukraine investigate former Vice President Joe Biden — who is also his potential political rival heading into the 2020 election — are merely part of the job.
“...I don’t see anything compromising at all. President Trump asked his colleague to investigate possible corrupt deals by former administration employees,” Putin said, apparently taking Trump’s side in the scandal. “Any head of state would be obliged to do this.”
He also said Democrats have turned to the Ukraine issue after finding no cooperation between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia.
“We see what’s going on in the United States - all pretexts are being used to attack President Trump,” Putin said. “Now it’s Ukraine... It became clear there was no secret deal between Russia and Trump’s team... Now another pretext has been found linked to Ukraine.”
Asked by a moderator to address American concerns that Russia will try to meddle in the next presidential election, Putin jokingly admitted he will surely interfere:
“I’ll tell you a secret - yes, we’ll definitely do this to cheer you up over there once and for all,” he said, which Reuters noted drew applause from the crowd.
